Hundreds of curious visitors streamed through Union Station in Burlington this past Saturday to see the fruits of 20 years of support to traditional artists in VT through our Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program. They were treated to live music by fiddlers, Koto players, and vocalists as well as dance performances from the Tibetian, Burundian, and Somali Bantu communities. Demonstrations in blacksmithing and stone carving were ongoing throughout the afternoon—with additional presentations by granite carvers, basket makers, flower arrangers, weavers, and more happening regularly inside Union Station. Those that stuck around late into the afternoon were treated to a free meal prepared by the Somali Bantu community. Master blacksmith, Lucian Avery summed it up when he wrote to us the following day: “I had a hard time leaving and I still missed most of what I wanted to see. I think the most inspiring part was just being around all the inspired people, folks with sparkles in their eyes.”

If you missed us on Saturday, but want to learn more—you can view multimedia stories about Lucian and several of the other participants on our website: www.vermontfolklifecenter.org/education/apprenticeship/

Celebrate Vermont Traditional Arts!

Join us for our Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Reunion Event on Saturday, April 13th from 1PM-5:30PM at Main Street Landing, One Main Street, in Burlington, VT.

The reunion celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the our Apprenticeship Program—supporting the continuation of Vermont’s traditional culture—old and new.

Over 30 past program participants will be on-site for arts and crafts demonstrations in stone carving, basketry, blacksmithing, weaving, flower arranging, and more, as well as a full program of traditional musical and dance performances, throughout the afternoon.

If you’re hungry, there will be local food vendors from Vermont’s New American communities offering an array of traditional dishes.

Entry is free and open to the public—a great event for kids and adults, alike!

Here’s the day’s schedule of events:

Demonstrations:

This advocacy opened connections to organizations across the state that are working to improve the lives of women and their families. These connections inspired Mary Claire to start a project called “Women Helping Women” for which she photographed and interviewed 30 women whose work—paid or volunteer—improves the lives of Vermont women. “I wanted to honor the women who did this work,” observed Mary Claire, “and to educate the larger community of Vermont about the issues these women face every day.”

Since completing this project, which was 10 years in the making, Mary Claire has actively sought opportunities to use photography to help others tell their stories as a form of advocacy. In 2011, for example, she collaborated with members of Vermont’s disability community to create the “Living Connections” exhibit, which tells the stories of Vermonters—with and without disabilities— and the connections they make that support and nurture them.

In her gallery talk on January 24th, Mary Claire will describe her approach to portraiture as well as the creative challenges and opportunities presented by the “Labor of Love” exhibit.

The Vision & Voice Documentary Workspace is located in the Vermont Folklife Center headquarters building at 88 Main Street in Middlebury. Gallery hours are 10:00 to 5:00 Tuesday through Saturday.
Vermont Folklife Center hosts “Labor of Love” exhibit in celebration of 25th anniversary of Vermont Works for Women

The Vermont Folklife Center is pleased to announce the opening of “Labor of Love,” which will be on exhibit in the Vermont Folklife Center’s Vision & Voice Documentary Workspace January 4 through 26. A reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, January 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

The “Labor of Love” exhibit was created by Vermont Works for Women in collaboration with the Vermont Folklife Center in celebration of Vermont Works for Women’s 25th anniversary. Pairing portraiture and interview excerpts, “Labor of Love” recognizes and honors women who are passionate about their work, who are an inspiration to others, and who exemplify excellence in their field.

The honorees come from all parts of Vermont. They are farmers, doctors, tattoo artists, college presidents, electricians, and general store clerks. They hail from Newport to Vernon. They are young and young-at-heart, well-known and not.

“Through Labor of Love, we have the invaluable opportunity to discuss our experience of work … so let’s do it!” exhorted Tiffany Bluemle, Executive Director of Vermont Works for Women. “Let’s talk about the choices we’ve made and the twists and turns of our individual journeys. These are stories worth sharing. And, because storytelling is an act of communion between two or more people, it has the potential to forge relationships that can support us over the long haul.”

“Labor of Love” features portraiture by Mary Claire Carroll in combination with excerpts from interviews conducted by young women from around Vermont and produced by the Vermont Folklife Center. Mary Claire Carroll will describe her approach to photography and the process of creating the exhibit images in a gallery talk at the Vermont Folklife Center on Thursday, January 24, at 7:00 PM.

The “Labor of Love” project was made possible by support from the Vermont Women’s Fund and FairPoint Communications. The Middlebury exhibition is supported by Chellis House, Women’s Resource Center, Middlebury College; Clementine; Ingrid Punderson Jackson Real Estate; Macintyre Fuels; and the Vermont Bookshop.
.
The Vision & Voice Documentary Workspace is located in the Vermont Folklife Center headquarters building at 88 Main Street in Middlebury.

On November 29th, Pete Sutherland treated an eager audience toballads and folksongs from the Flanders collection, along with fiddle music learned from area players of old. He also performed “history songs” of his own composition that explore such wide-ranging local topics as the 1927 flood, kaolin mining in Monkton, and Champlain’s introduction of weapons of mass destruction to native people in 1609.

The mini-concert was planned in parallel with an exhibition of Pete’s work in the Vermont Folklife Center’s Sales Gallery. A late bloomer as a visual artist, Pete has been making collage art for the past 10 years. Known to an ever-widening fan base for his annual wall calendars, he has mounted shows of original work at area coffeehouses and galleries and has received commissions for portraits and CD art.

DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION SUCCESS

Community members packed the building on Saturday night for the Day of the Dead Celebration at the Vermont Folklife Center. A Day of the Dead altar ceremony lead by Irma Valeriano of the University of Vermont was followed by music and dinner…all deliciously prepared by local volunteers. Special thanks to everyone that joined us on Saturday evening, assisted in the altar construction, donated time or food for the event, and finally to the partnering organizations: Addison County Farm Worker Coalition, Middlebury College Juntos, and the Invisible Odysseys Project.

Photographs from the Day of the Dead Altar at the Vermont...

Photographs from the Day of the Dead Altar at the Vermont Folklife Center—constructed by community members under the direction of Irma Valeriano of the University of Vermont. Today, Thursday November 8th is your last chance to view the altar—visit the Vermont Folklife Center at 88 Main Street in Middlebury, VT before 5PM!

'A View from the Backstretch' Heads to the Flynn—Amy E. Tarrant Gallery

We are excited to see A View from the Backstretch moving on from our Vision and Voice Documentary Workspace to its next stop at the Flynn’s Amy E. Tarrant Gallery in Burlington, VT. The exhibit pairs work by award winning photographer Dona Ann McAdams and a group of Saratoga Race Course backstretch workers with whom she collaborated, including exercise riders, hot walkers, maintenance personnel, a trainer, and a groom.

Though these two bodies of work have been previously exhibited independently (McAdams photographs at an independent gallery in Salem, NY, and the backstretch workers images in a separate show produced by the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga, NY)—the creation of A View from the Backstretch is he first time these works have been exhibited in tandem—thanks to a collaborative exhibit co-production between McAdams and the Vermont Folklife Center. The exhibit is fantastic and we are proud to have been given the opportunity to work with such a dynamic artist in McAdams (not to mention the work of her students and co-exhibitors from the backstretch)!

If you didn’t catch the show in Middlebury—or if you want to see it again—it will be on display at the Amy E. Tarrant Gallery from November 2, 2012 to January 26, 2013, with an artist reception being held November 2 from 5:30-8:00PM.

And, check out a recent blog post about the show from the Flynn’s Executive Director, John Killacky:

http://www.flynncenter.org/blog/2012/10/on-the-backstretch-with-award-winning-photographer-dona-ann-mcadams

CRAFTING COMMUNITY VIDEO PROJECTS

A two-day workshop on Saturday October 13 and Sunday, October 14; 10 am to 4 pm

For registration and tuition information call (802) 388-4964 or visit www.vermontfolklifecenter.org. The deadline for registration is October 10, 2012.

This workshop gives participants the opportunity to create a short multi-media documentary project from start to finish. The workshop will begin with conceptualizing a piece and end with publishing it digitally. The workshop will also survey ethics, aesthetics, and technique before developing and producing a project.

With historic Middlebury, Vermont, as the location, workshop participants will use photography, video, and audio recording to create a unique and artistic media piece that reflects the character of the place, the values of the local residents, and the aesthetics of the filmmakers.

Day One: The first morning the group will decide on a topic and then create a project structure —leading to a storyboard— to plan how various media (still images, audio, and moving images) will blend to form the piece. In the afternoon participants will go outside and work in teams recording around town, some shooting stills, others pursuing interviews, others recording ambient audio or shooting video.

Day Two: This day will be dedicated to editing the project using Final Cut Pro. Familiarity with the software and Macintosh computers is recommended, but not required. Participants will work in groups of two to edit individual aspects of the project as decided on the original storyboard. By the afternoon the groups will reconvene to put the components together and upload the finished piece onto Vimeo for the world to see.

Instructor Scott Miller is a documentary photographer and filmmaker originally from Vermont and Kenya. He has extensive international field experience, having completed photographic and ethnographic projects in Kerala (India), southern Spain, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Queens, NY.

JOIN US FOR THIS IMPORTANT FILM - LOS QUE SE QUEDAN (Those Who...

JOIN US FOR THIS IMPORTANT FILM - LOS QUE SE QUEDAN (Those Who Stay Behind) WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

Thursday, October 18, 7-9 pm at Vermont Folklife Center

This film focuses on the families left behind by Mexican migrants in the United States. The focus on the issue of migration that we see in the movies tends to focus on the treacherous journey that so many Mexicans and Central Americans make across the border to the United States, or what life is like once they get there. The homes and families that those migrants come from are usually just a jumping-off point for filmmakers, but Directors Rulfo and Hagerman chose to stay at the point of departure to see how those who remain are impacted. The directors spent 11 months with more than a dozen Mexican families, living in their homes, observing their lives and getting a sense of their realities.

“The intimacy that the directors capture in the film, in terms of people’s feelings as well as the relationships they have with their loved ones, is what gives “Those Who Remain” its poetic tone…,” says the LA Times.

This two-day workshop offers participants an introduction to the techniques of digital audio editing. On the first day, participants will receive a quick course in recording technique and then hit the streets of Middlebury to conduct short interviews. Back in the classroom, these recordings will be used as raw material to edit together short audio pieces. By the end of two days, attendees will have the skills to begin working on their own sound stories at home.

This workshop is intended for students, community members, staff members of non-profit cultural, community, and social-service agencies, as well as professional researchers interested in learning more about digital audio editing. No editing experience is required, but participants should be confident computer users. The workshop is taught on Macintosh computers, using a digital editing program called Soundtrack Pro. The fundamental skills developed will be transferable to any audio editing platform.

Instructor Erica Heilman is an award-winning radio producer. Her work has aired on NPR’s Day to Day, Hearing Voices, KQED San Francisco, WGBH Boston, VPR, and other public radio affiliates nationwide. Erica also offers deep experience incorporating audio editing and production within an educational setting, having worked with high school students as a part of Vermont Folklife Center’s Youth Radio Vermont program.

Registration forms and tuition information are available on line at http://www.vermontfolklifecenter.org/education/cultural-sustainability/ or by calling (802) 388-4964.
